I am finding this series a difficult one to write about.  I’ve been talking about procrastination and the different ways in which we (I) procrastinate.  If you’d like to follow along, you can go back to the beginning.

Have you ever wanted to do something, said you’re going to do something, talk about how good it will be when the “thing” is done … but then never actually seem to get it done?

I’ve done this before, in fact I do it all the time.

It could be something at work, a job that has been assigned to you.  It could be a task you have to do for your home business, or it could even be a fun craft project at home that you want to complete (like refinishing a piece of furniture).  The problem is, that you just honestly don’t know what you’re doing?


You may know bits and pieces of how to do a project, but you are stuck and like you don’t know the best way to get it done, the nitty-gritty step by step blue print as it were.  So what do you do,  you continually put it off.

I often get this attitude like “If I ignore it, it will go away.” I know not very productive,  right?

You keep putting it off because you lack the knowledge or the skill, or the vision that you need to do the thing?

Gaining knowledge and learning a new skill can be a bit scary, it can definitely take some extra time to complete due to the initial learning curve, it can feel a bit overwhelming, and most often we simply just don’t know how to get started on it.

So what do you do?

First, you need to make a decision if this task is something that you really want to do, or are required to do to move forward.  If the answer is YES, then you need to figure out a manageable, actionable plan to get the task accomplished.

In fact, to get a good example, let’s look at At Home With Heather #AHWH.

When I started this blog up a few months ago,  I hadn’t blogged in several years.  I kind of remembered bits n pieces AND my entire old blog and all of the content had been whipped out (due to my own bad judgement and lack of planning).  So basically I was starting with just a domain name.

I knew then and still know that I want to get AHWH back up and functional.  I want it to become a favorite read and place where you look to for advice.  I want it to be fun and funny, I want it to be thought provoking.  I want it to BE a lot of things, but I don’t really know how to get there.  A lot has changed online.  And, as with any skill if you don’t use it, you lose it.

As I was looking for some images for this post today, I came across an article on the Female Entrepreneur Association, and it fits in really well with this post, procrastinating because you don’t know how.headlights

The podcast on the article was talking about how when you don’t know how to do something, visualize it.  Visualize the end result, and the steps that you need to take to get there.  Like headlights lighting up the dark, you may not see the entire path, BUT you WILL see far enough to keep going.

The podcast really struck a chord with me because I have been a fan/ follower of Abraham-Hicks for years.  They really do have some great material on visualizing and getting into proper alignment with something.  Getting into the Vortex is one of my favorites, and I have it downloaded on to my computer.

After you have visualized the project (and continue to do so), sit down and realistically figure out the steps you need to take to get started with it.

  • Do you need to read a book, or watch some tutorials, or take a class?
  • If it is a task for your business, can you delegate the task (or parts of it) to someone else?  Having to complete a task, doesn’t always mean that it has to be completed by you.  Can you outsource the task to someone who already has the required skill set?
  • Set a date of that you need to have the task completed by.  If you simply keep it on your wish list of things you “need to do”, it is not actionable.  If it’s not actionable, it will actually stay on your need to do list for months and months.
  • Keep visualizing the task and what you want it to look like.

Then, start taking the steps one by one, bit by bit.  What you’ll find is that what you have been visualizing will start to materialize in front of you.  Little bit by little bit, and with each step your vibration and knowing how to do it will grow stronger.

In the case of At Home with Heather, I hope that the project will NEVER be complete because it is a journey and will always be growing and changes as my vision for it grows and changes.  It is a work in progress, and that is just the way I like it.  The key being Progress 😉

Perfectionism can kill a project…

I’ve been talking about procrastination and the reasons why I procrastinate.  You can follow along with this series from the beginning.

I put a video up on YouTube about a month ago…  It was TERRIBLE!!  But I put it up anyway.  I was nervous, I couldn’t form my sentences.  But my thinking was that if I don’t start somewhere, I will never start. By the way, if you want to see the dreadful video, you can go to my channel.  I will never get better at making video is I don’t just push through the thought that it has to be perfect.  A friend of mine watched the clip and agreed with everything that I was thinking.  She said:

a little more flowing / it seemed you were really thinking what to say or better : how to say it ….I think the premise is awesome… cause you don’t usually have to think what to say… I think the premise is awesome …but on this clip it sounded like it, almost as if you were nervous

Yesterday, I was talking about procrastination, and how it can hurt your business and your life.  One of the main reasons for procrastination (at least for me) is Fear.

Fear is a terrible thing, and I’m talking about both fear of failure AND fear of success.

Fear and Procrastination

What is fear of failure?

A good example of fear of failure is not learning something new because you don’t think that you’ll be able to do it, or not doing a blog post because you feel like no one will read it, or not trying a new weight loss method because you think it might be to hard.

We get stuck in this kind of fear and it causes us to procrastinate and put things off.


What I have found in this situation is that it’s a matter of saying to yourself “What’s the worse thing that can happen”.  Basically, the worst thing that can happen is that the “thing” (whatever that thing may be for you) doesn’t work.

So what, it doesn’t work!  At least then you have something started that you can tweak, or try a different approach or whatever.  Trying something is never a “failure”, it is always a learning process. [click to continue…]

procrastinationProcrastination can be seriously hurting you, and your business!

I chose this topic because it is something that I struggle with almost daily, and because I just finished an easy read on the subject of procrastination.

Heck, I even procrastinated about getting this post started, lol.  Most of the time I don’t mean to procrastinate, I start of the day with very good intentions.  But then minute by minute and hour by hour the day marches on and I am left at the end feeling like I have accomplished nothing.  I go to bed disappointed, frustrated, and vowing that tomorrow will be different.

Let’s take today for example.  It is only 8:00 AM as I am writing this.  I woke up at 6.  For two hours, I have been struggling, and wasting time and look – now already 2 hours of my day is *POOF* Gone! I am currently involved in a challenge for the month of July about getting more done in less time.  One of my objectives is to blog for 30 minutes a day, first thing in the morning.
