Being Popular – You can’t just Join the Club you’ve got to Show Up to the Party!!

by Heather Masson on September 15, 2009

Remember back in the day, if you were anyone trying to climb the social ladder? It wasn’t just as easy as joining the club and POOF – you were Mr./Miss Popularity!  You had to show up!!! You can to find out who had joined the club with you, and then take the time to learn their names, and why they joined, and what they were interested in.  Even better yet, when you show up to the next meeting and you remember the names and faces.  Being poplular can take some serious time and effort.  But as you are going through the motions, what you find is many people that later become good friends because you took the time in the beginning to find out if your interests were the same.

The same holds true with the social network sites.

If you are trying to be popular, and get some traffic, find some like minded people, or whatever your reason is.  You can’t just join the facebook, or any of the other networks; never show up to see who has joined with you and yet expect to be popular. It doesn’t work that way…

Being social takes time and effort on your part.

  • You do have to join the club – Decide what network is right for you, or join more than one.  Some people belong to different networks for different reasons.  I am on myspace (that’s where I started out, back when it was still cool) facebook (I finally joined under duress) mybloglog (though I’m not very up to date) blogcatalog, and google friend connect (very new to me), just off the top of my head.
  • Go out and shake some hands – Introduce yourself.  Get some names, look for friends, find people that are
    Say Hello!

    Say Hello!

interested in the same kind of stuff as you are, find people that are above you inability, and people that are below it as well.  Find people!  Don’t just log out, never to be seen for months on end.  You may as well have not wasted the time to sign up.

  • Go check out their game – If they have a website or blog, go visit it!  If you LIKE something you see, or have something to add comment a blog.  Join a feed.  Share them with some other friends.  Be Social!
  • Find some associates, and find some friends – It’s true.  You won’t “click” with everyone that you encounter on every social network.  But hey, that’s okay there are thousands of profiles and people waiting to meet you.  Some you will really enjoy, and in fact,  you will become good friends with many of these people.  Others you will know and remember, they will stick out in a crowd – Oh that’s Lisa Marie – she does some really cool stuff for kids. or whomever.  But keep doing it, because they will likely do the same to/for you.

So I’ve been away from blogging for two years, and I’ve missed it.  I have been spending more time on the social aspect than anything so far.  But I’m learning in the process, and doing some great research that I will be able to share with you in the coming days.

One of the first things I did, was try and connect with some of my old buddies.  And you know what?  Many remembered me!  I don’t think they would have, if I hadn’t taken the time to say hello! ;)

I love being online.  I love to meet people and help them where I can.  I love to learn from them and share with them.  I kind of feel like a newbie, but that’s okay, we are all doing this together.

Coffees always on

Coffee's always on

Being social does take time.  But it is time very well spent. Just like back in high school and college, you can’t be “popular” without being a friend. :)
