Earn Money at Home with Your Hobby

by Heather Masson on September 23, 2009

The experts always tell you that it will be easier to earn income, or make it work by incorporating something that you love. Do you have a hobby that you really enjoy? What is it, and how can you turn that hobby into a way for you to earn money at home?

Let me tell you about my Saturday morning ritual. I have a groups of friends, that I call my “circle” we’ve been friends for a long time, and know that we can rely on each other without question… Anyway, one of the things that we like to do (they more than me, but I’m getting into it ;) ) is start out early on a Saturday morning, grab a cup of Tim Horton’s coffee (the best in Canada) and go to all the garage sales in town. It was great when I was re-doing my house a few years back. I love old trinkets and treasures. Not so great when buy a slate pool table (because it was a great deal), and then have to demo your basement to make it fit – but that’s a story for another day.  garagesale

Okay, so maybe I’m getting a bit off topic here.  I get out whenever I can, more for the social aspect than any other reason. We have a BLAST!! The thing of it is, after a few years, your house if full to the brim with all of these cute things, and you start to wonder where the heck you’re gonna put it all.

One of the ladies in the group, Margaret, who up until this point has been totally afraid to be online, has started running an ebay store. She doesn’t have a website, barely has an email account and yet is on line selling these little trinkets and treasures.

Now,  when we go out looking (and they are going more often)  besides just a bunch of friends getting together to destress and have a bit of fun on a Saturday morning, we are always on the look out for something that Marg can list on her ebay store.

What I’m saying here is find something that you love to do, and really enjoy. The income will often follow in you only start thinking outside the box just a little bit.

I have another friend (who I met online) that LOVES collecting records.  He’s been doing it forever.  He has over 15000 in his collection.  He sells enough to supplement his income and has been selling on ebay since almost as long as ebay has been around.  You can take a look at his profile,  Hepster’s Hole.

Take a look at them, give you any ideas?  Do you have a hobby?  Is there a way to make it pay, so you can start earning money at home?

The biggest reason to use a hobby or something you are passionate about is so you can maintain interest in what it is that you’re writing about. Granted, some hobbies or topics will have a very narrow audience and their ability to make money will be a little tougher, however, just about any topic can turn into a moneymaker. Thanks for sharing this as I believe that topics people are passionate about will result in their greatest success – I’ve found that to be the case for me anyway.

First let me say thanks for coming and leaving me a comment. I really appreciate them, and you.

I agree with you, it is much easier to write about something that you are interested in. Easier to find material, easier to be informative, and answer questions to the people that visit your blog.

These friends of mine want nothing to do with blogs, they are both very happy to have their ebay stores, and make some extra cash. Not everyone wants to be online blogging, or setting up webistes. And that’s cool too!!

Now if it were me, I’d set up the ebay store, and then start blogging and trying to show people how it works…. ;)

I think you can even really benefit by enhancing your online presence with a blog – even if you only dedicate an hour a week to it, it’s amazing what you can accomplish. If you have an ebay store or some other type of product-centric business, you can share updates via your blog and it’s just one more avenue for people to reach you online. :-)
