Before You Go and Buy The Next “Latest and Greatest”…. Read This

by Heather Masson on November 9, 2010

Today was my first day back after a week away with my family.  This was our 5th year out to my condo in the mountains for a week of fun and relaxation.  We generally try and go the first week of November to give the kids a break from school, and rest up before the Christmas rush.

I’d say it was the best year we’ve had out there yet!

I’ll admit, although I did not do any serious work, I did have my laptop with me to keep an eye on things and keep in contact.  Besides, I am way to much of an Internet Junkie to go a whole week without being online. ;)

After taking that step away for a week, I’ve come back rejuvenated, re-energized, and ready dig in.  I’d like to share with you a two different things that caught my attention and have impacted me, and the way I’m thinking about my business.

Do you remember my last post about Bright Shiny Objects?  Well, I’ve been testing, trying and thinking about them A LOT!  It was getting me very discouraged, so discouraged in fact, that I went into my paypal account, and canceled all my recurring payments - BOOM done!

frustrated

frustrated

I was frustrated as hell, and angry with myself!  I know better than going after all of the next “latest and greatest” products.  In fact I’ve told you not to do that too!! Building a business is a slow and steady process.  Baby steps if that’s what it takes.

The thing is, I’m not looking to get rich.  Really I’m not.  I’m just looking to create a business that will sustain a comfortable lifestyle.   One that will allow me to take a vacation here and there, or to not worry about the next time the car brakes down, hell - maybe even to be able to go and get a new one if I so choose.  I want to have enough cash in the bank to give someone a nice gift - just because I think they need a pick me up, and not worry.  I want to have a porterhouse once in a while instead of just a rib steak....  You know what I mean, don't you?

Anyway back to my point - the two things that have impacted me.

Thing One

After I canceled all of those recurring payments in my paypal, (and when I say all - the only things that I kept were my hosting payments, and my autoresponder) I got an email...  from Chris Lang.  He was asking me why I had canceled my Gwave Mastery subscription.  I was a tad embarrassed.  No one has ever actually emailed me before to see why I cancelled something.  And I didn't cancel for any reason other than my sheer frustration.

I wasn’t going to answer him, and then I thought what have I got to lose?  So I sent him an email back telling of my frustrations and my goals and apologizing for canceling.  We emailed back and forth for a few days.  I was impressed with the fact that he was taking the time to respond to me - even after I had canceled!  That really showed me that he actually does care about helping people like myself.

Chris  does a weekly consulting with his Mastery students so that every Friday you can phone and talk to him personally for 15 minutes to get help with whatever problems you are having.

I had never bothered to phone, and it ended up that I spent almost an hour the Friday before I went on vacation going through my business on the phone with Chris.  He gave me tons of pointers, things that I could be doing, and should be doing.  You can bet I’ll be calling again him again!

Chris is an authority on anything and everything Google, but he didn’t get that way over night.  It took him countless hours and years of dedication.  Talking with him on the phone, it is absolutely evident that this is his passion.  He loves what he does, and it doesn't feel like work.

BTW - I would HIGHLY recommend his Gwave mastery membership to anyone and everyone who is trying to build their business online.  “700 pages of step by step coaching, videos and live consulting, teaching you how to use YouTube, Buzz, Google Reader and more to dominate Google Search Rankings And Local Search and get your YouTube videos ranking top 10 where buyers want what you sell.”  AND I know that Chris has something really cool that is a Google First coming up really soon, I’ll keep you up to date on that.  You should go sign up for Gwave here.

Thing Two

A simple blog post from my long-time mentor Lynn Terry.

Lynn has always been an inspiration to me, she has done, exactly what I am wanting to do.  She was home for her children, and her grandmother.  She was able to work the hours that she wanted.  Some days that was 16 hours, but some days it might have only been 16 minutes... it was up to her.

Lynn did a post that put into words a lot of what I had been thinking and feeling, and why I was so frustrated and angry.  Check it out if you want a really good read.

Lynn has a business, and a business model.  She spends much of her time mentoring and helping people with their online business success through her blog and forum, SSWT.  It has always been a passion of hers.

Beyond that she is a Super Affiliate, and that is where the main chunk of her income comes from.  Not from being flashy or showy with the next greatest gadget, software or book.  Like Lynn says in her post - her message has never changed.  She is running a business, with hard work and dedication.

Have you noticed a pattern here?

It’s not about buying the next product that will make you $363,829.87 or whatever the hell the sales copy suggests in the next 43 minutes.  It’s about building a business to build your life.  A business, that will sustain you.

Have you been caught up in this crazy hype that’s been going around?  Have you been hypnotized into buying some of these products?  How’s that working for ya?  I’d really like to hear from you on this one....

I can’t tell you how many ebooks, DVDs, CDs whatever that was going to make me the next millionaire.

Once I focused and started understanding what it takes to build a business, my business actually started taking off.

Nice Post!

Thanks Mark! Yes that is the phase that takes some a long time to come to (myself included), understanding that follow through and execution will get you way closer to your goal than the next ebook that is being released. ;)
